The Interrogator with Ivan Martin

  • Share

Introducing actor, writer, and creative powerhouse Ivan Martin, collaborator with Michael Godere in the film Loitering with Intent, with a cast that includes Sam Rockwell and Marisa Tomei, which recently debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival. In this Proustian-like questionnaire, SIXTY attempts to peel back the layers to reach the inner core of this talented man… or at least find out what beverage you should be buying him when you meet him for a drink at the bar. And now, a moment with Mr. Ivan Martin.

Place of residence:

Brooklyn, New York

Current occupation:

Actor. Writer. No slash needed.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I’ve been grown up for a long time now.

Quote to live by:

“Winter Buddhist, summer nudist. ” –Arjun Bhasin

First job you ever had:

Newspaper delivery. Beaver, Pennsylvania. For real.

Least favorite part of your day:

The gymnasium.

Windows down, the song you’re playing is:

“Police in Helicopter” by John Holt.

Three guilty pleasures:

It’s usually food that gets me wearing a disguise even in my own shack. I can eat more hot dogs than I thought was humanly possible. I can’t compete with Joey Chestnut at Nathan’s contest in Coney Island… but still. My wife makes a Nutella panna cotta topped with Peeps chicks… it’s sick! I’m guilty of binge-watching the French cop show Engrenages (Spiral), though I’m feeling less bad these days as I’ve discovered I’m not the only one dosing and calling out “Azziz!” in my nightmares. Watch the show at your own peril.

If you had to watch one movie on repeat for eternity, what would it be?

Ninotchka.

You have a million dollars to spend on art, you buy…

I would buy work by the Cuban-born and Miami-based painter Ana Carballosa. I would also grab the latest photographic series by the Bronx’s favorite daughter and lens master, Lisa Leone. If I could make a couple of more moves then I would give a call to Laure Carre and Oscar Murillo. When can I have the money and start spending?!

Plane, train or automobile for a road trip?

Automobile.

What IS your favorite road trip?

The one I’m going to make with my wife Emmanuelle crisscrossing the USA. She is the queen of the two-lane blacktop… one hard driving mama. Plus, she knows how to get lost in the best way.

Personal travel ethos:

Always travel light.

Drink of choice:

Depends on the temperature. But Tequila irrigates most of my situations perfectly. Summer is for my rum diaries. Rum will getcha.

Beach house or tree house:

Beach house.

Where was the best meal you ever had?

Roadside with my lover. French picnic style.

What is the best news you ever received?

That we were a go to make Loitering with Intent… and do it with our closest friends.

Who or what is largely overrated?

Explain. Symmetry is overrated. No explanation necessary.

Briefly describe the best concert you have ever gone to.

I can’t name just one. There are so many that changed my very makeup. I guessed the earliest ones scarred my tissue the best. The first Elvis Costello tour in the US. The Clash at Bonds in NYC. Black Uhuru on the Pier with the Intrepid battleship looming in the water next door, The Specials at Finsbury Park. Public Image Limited at The Zoo in Queens. All of them pure madness… and dangerous.

Where do you go for inspiration, peace of mind?

Books.
