Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium

  • Share

In his portraits, whether the subject was Patti Smith or a tulip still life, Robert Mapplethorpe sought perfection. The images were restrained in color but vital in composition. Through his lens, he could transform a figure and, in its simplicity, lay something bare–both figuratively and very much literally. Running March through July, LACMA and the Getty Museum will play host to a dual exhibition of the late photographer’s work in their respective spaces. Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium presents a comprehensive collection of his provocative work, from portraits to still lifes, collages to sculptures, captured between the 1960s and 1980s.
