Let’s be honest: everything chef Christina Tosi whips up for her famed Milk Bar sweets chain is anathema to a California diet. You will find no beet sugar and coconut oil here, no oat milk or almond milk or non-soy non-dairy alternatives. Tosi only works with the real deal: butter, sugar, and flour. Oh, yes. And sprinkles. Tons and tons of sprinkles. This woman is an absolute master in Standard American Deliciousness. She bakes the kind of downhome stuff you grew up on, taken to the nth degree.
Nutritional value be damned, Milk Bar is what Los Angeles will get as of this week. The Melrose Avenue location, in what once housed a Winchell’s Donut House (RIP), will serve as the brand’s West Coast flagship. The large kitchen, beyond producing innumerous goodies, will serve as an educational space, where you–mere newbie chef mortal that you are–can take decoration seminars and baking classes.
For those who prefer to leave their baked goods to the pros, Milk Bar will be delivering all the eye-popping yumminess for which they have become known. In addition to Tosi’s previously established (and absolutely addictive) numbers like Crack Pie, Compost Cookies, and B-Day Cake Truffles, this location will feature L.A.-specific menu additions like Pineapple Fo’Sho Whip soft serve and Bread Bombs made with ingredient combos like pastrami and rye, chorizo and egg, and elote cornbread.
