Where to Sip a Cocktail Alfresco in Los Angeles

  • Share

In any city, weather permitting, the choice to enjoy a cocktail, a glass of wine, or a mug of beer inside or out is an obvious one. Of course you’re going to pair your bev with a sparkling city view when offered! In L.A., with the mountains and the hills as your backdrop, a cocktail al fresco qualifies as an absolute must-do. Here are six rooftop bars in town with stellar views—and equally stellar libations.

Above SIXTY at SIXTY Beverly Hills

The view from Above SIXTY is, by far, one of the best in the city, and we’re not just saying that because it’s one of our properties. You might not think that the hotel’s rooftop bar—in the middle of the 90210 zip—would have sweeping panoramic views of the whole city, but we can assure you it does. The view of the Hollywood Hills to the north is particularly spectacular. Plus, there’s a pool. Did we mention the cocktails?

Mama Shelter

Bright and endlessly cheery, Mama Shelter feels like an adult playground. As for decor, you’ll find bold stripes, poppy pastels, and many a planted palm. The bar is plopped right atop atop Hollywood, and the views are as delicious as what the bar is serving, if not more so.

Broken Shaker

Cocktail outfit Broken Shaker made a name for itself at the Freehand Hotel in Miami. Its stirred concoctions drew crowds to its sort of out-of-the-way locale. For its Los Angeles outpost, Broken Shaker has found a home in the center of Downtown Los Angeles, making it a destination of note, especially for those coming from the east side.

Upstairs at the Ace Hotel

Upstairs is a popular Downtown L.A. hangout with panoramic views of the city. To get to the bar, take the elevator all the way up from the street. You’ll exit onto a rooftop oasis with beautiful Art Deco details. There’s all kinds of seating in the indoor-outdoor space, plus a very small pool should you feel like a dip. On the drinks menu, order a punch bowl to share or choose a city-themed cocktail—the Vermont & Beverly is particularly good.

Another choice rooftop bar in Downtown L.A. is Perch. Aptly named, this spot will make you feel like you’re sitting on top of it all. There are two levels at Perch: an indoor-outdoor balcony lounge with sofas, greenery, and cozy nooks, and another true rooftop deck above it. It’s surrounded by a clear glass railing—those afraid of heights need not apply. The menu takes on a French theme and, as far as cocktails go, the French Maid is a smart order.

High at the Hotel Erwin

A drink by the ocean is practically required on trips to LA. And the best way to do it better is to leverage some elevation. High at the Hotel Erwin in Venice is a perfect place to do just that. Like the others on this list, it’s an ideal perch to watch the sun go down, and, if you linger longer, the staff will come around with blankets to keep you cozy. Why not order a Mai Tai? You are on th edge of the Pacific, after all.
